You also have to decide when to show your hand vs. Everyone is into different games. Roll for the Galaxy has a 'best at 2 player' percentage of Sure, I'm not questioning your methodology, just wondering why the two games would have such different ratings from the community. Also, is there a reason Race for the Galaxy is there, but Roll for the Galaxy isn't? In particular, the 2 player variant for Race has players picking 2 roles, as opposed to Roll where each player picks 1, and the third is random. Both are themed perfectly - i. How is it? After you perform an action, you flip the action token to indicate it's been used and draw a new card. It's not some life-altering experience, just a good game for 2 players. You're welcome :- Updated the post with a link to the best 2 player only games which includes all of your suggestions. Nice list, but the thing is that restricting yourself to the top means you are more likely to get multiplayer games that play good at 2 and it leaves out a whole chunk of dedicated 2 player only games which are more niche and don't get enough exposure to break top There is the entire sub-genre of duelling games for example which are designed for head to head, but with the exception of A:NR, they dont break top , or even top You're right. I've played with the dummy die, and I don't like it as much as 3 or more players. I only played it once or twice but I didn't find it that engaging. There is a link to the best 2 player only games at the bottom of the post which has Jaipur at number 10 if you're interested. Literally too soon as a fan group see nisei. A new corp ID was released after the most recent and final world championship. Surprised Jairpur isn't on this list. Got a neat photo for the banner? I found it easy to search for 2 player only games but found it hard to find the ones that don't just support 2 players but are still really good with 2. It's an elegant solution, but I think having an actual third player and a tableau to guess their selected action is better than the dummy die. Something else? A real masterpiece. Just getting into board games so looking for great games BTW, thanks for doing this, I think it's a very cool thread. As someone else mentioned, I'm surprised not to see Jaipur on the list. Overall, it's a great combination of some push-pull in the center, I-cut-you-choose, some hidden information, and trying to predict what your opponent is going to do. All of those except Odin's Raven are on the best 2 player only games list that I linked in an edit to my post. Is it different enough from others to make it a go-to game? But I don't recommend twilight struggle as much as Patchwork or Jaipur.{/INSERTKEYS}{/PARAGRAPH} List of the best games for 2 players BGG self. See Calendar. Personally, it doesn't matter. Jaipur is ranked so just missed out given how the program I made currently works. Those two and Hanamikoji are my favorite quicker 2p games, in fact I've run a few 6 player 2p tournaments where we rotate those three. If they've won 4 geisha or a target number of charm they win the game, if not the favor remains where it is and you play another round. No worries. Please don't hesitate to PM the moderators. If you aren't into it after a few, it just might not be your thing. Wish I'd titled the post "Most popular 2 player supported games" though to avoid confusion. It's not even a dummy player that you have to manage It doesn't detract from the game at all IMO and I think it's a great 2p game. Also would've expected to see Fox in the Forest on there. {PARAGRAPH}{INSERTKEYS}The 1 reddit source for news, information, and discussion about modern board games. Please see the wiki for a full explanation of the rules. The title does make the bold claim of being the "best games for two players". Will look to improve it but just made it for fun this afternoon. Not that it needs to be re-confirmed, but I can definitely vouch for the top 2 - love em both. Once everyone's actions are up, the hidden cards are revealed and played. Instant buy and now it's definitely got more plays than anything else since then. Questions or problems with flair? It's all good dude, I play a lot of 2-player games and don't care if I ever play Jaipur again. As you each play and cards are placed near the geisha, you'll start to get a sense of who your opponent is going for and can change which cards to offer. The actions are:. The fun and unique part is each player starts with 6 cards and 4 action tiles. All in a very quick game that can be played multiple times at happy hour. Playing the odds on a dummy die's face doesn't feel as good as looking at a player's board and trying to guess which phase they've set themselves up for this turn. I know I don't need another 2p game but, hey, I'm always "shopping", right? I would say most of my gaming is 2P so glad to see your post. I'm equally as likely to pull it out at 2 or 3. Glad you find it interesting :- Wish BGG offered the functionality to filter by the player number votes but still an incredible resource and I enjoyed making my program. For a slightly longer experience, 7 Wonders Duel is my pick and for a heavy experience I love SW Rebellion, both mentioned. So I made a program which gave me the info for that table. I personally would go further and say Roll for the Galaxy is good at 4 and 5, where as Race for the Galaxy is best at 2 or 3. There's a tug of war in the center where you're trying to win over favor of geisha. Most of them just don't think it's best at 2p because an actual player is better than a die roll. Each card is a gift that gains you favor with the geisha when placed. Hanamikoji is fantastic. The key is in a round you must perform each action only exactly once! That invites critique. Because people don't like that you have to roll 1 extra die to pick a possible 3rd action that happens. It sounds like you're assuming they're similar, when Roll for the Galaxy is fairly different from Race for the Galaxy. I keep seeing Hanamikoji pop up in lists and occasionally on auction. It's nice to see these kinds of discussions no matter when they happen. A list of the best 2 players only games can be found here. Rebellion is the quintessential Star Wars game you always wanted, and Twilight Struggle is simply one of the best designed modern 2-player board games. I had heard it was good for a long time but was reluctant until we gave it a shot at a board game cafe in Nashville. Please note these aren't my personal picks, just the ones that pass the criteria above as computed by a program I made. Does it take multiple games to get into it? Edit2: It seems to favor games that can accommodate more than just 2 players as they will generally be more popular. Thanks for your game suggestions. A lot of people like it, a lot don't. The brain burning moments are great and the gameplay is simple enough it moves along. The other issue is BGG rating is not a good proxy for "best" -- it simply measures which games have the most hardcore fans. It's not really clear, but I was specifically looking for games that weren't just 2 player only games. Nobody wants to have weird yet consensual alien tentacle sex playing Consentacle? Thanks for these lists. Vote here! Like I said, I don't think it detracts from the game. Roll has you roll a die for a dummy player to simulate a third player's action. Schotten Totten is another curious omission. I've had a good experience playing Jaipur with more than 3. There's a small varient on BGG I found a while wgo. That will be the real crucible moment and deciding point as to whether ANR is good and truly dead. This list was for finding the 2 player supported games that are best with 2 players which wasn't clear from the post title. Numbers are added up and geisha favor switches from neutral to either player. Following on from this post: top rated 2 player supported games to possibly avoid?
